Top December Movies List

One of my favourite shows on TV, Criminal Minds, offers up some brilliant and quirky characters – both on and off the set. Matthew Gray Gubler, who plays the adorable Dr. Reid, often provides some comic relief, again – both on and off the set. I recently came across his Facebook post about his favourite December movie. I thought it was worth sharing. Enjoy.

Things Babies Born in 2011 Will Never Know

Things Babies Born in 2011 Will Never KnowI recently came across an interesting article on Yahoo Finance about a list of things babies born in 2011 will never know. Among the most interesting, for me anyways, are those things that are intangible: the separation of work and home; forgetting friends or anything else for that matter; and being able to hide.

The separation of work and home: When you’re carrying an email-equipped computer in your pocket, it’s not just your friends who can find you — so can your boss. For kids born this year, the wall between office and home will be blurry indeed.

Forgotten friends: Remember when an old friend would bring up someone you went to high school with, and you’d say, “Oh yeah, I forgot about them!” The next generation will automatically be in touch with everyone they’ve ever known even slightly via Facebook.

Forgotten anything else: Kids born this year will never know what it was like to stand in a bar and incessantly argue the unknowable. Today the world’s collective knowledge is on the computer in your pocket or purse. And since you have it with you at all times, why bother remembering anything?

Hiding: Not long ago, if you didn’t answer your home phone, that was that — nobody knew if you were alive or dead, much less where you might be. Now your phone is not only in your pocket, it can potentially tell everyone — including advertisers — exactly where you are.

All in the FAMILY

Family Day 2011Did you know that Family Day was first held in the Province of Alberta in 1990? It was meant to reflect the values of family that were very important to the pioneers who founded Alberta. It was introduced in Saskatchewan in 2007 and Ontario in 2008. Skating, skiing, snowboarding, sledding, visiting museums… are just a few of hundreds of things you can do to celebrate Family Day 2011.

Other ideas more specific to the different provinces:

Ontario:

Alberta Family Day

Saskatchewan Family Day

Specifically the GTA:

  • TIFF Lightbox has free viewings of some excellent films including several of Tim Burton’s classics (James and the Giant Peach, Alice in Wonderland) and other internationally lauded films (Bibi Blocksberg about a 12 year-old witch and The Red Shoes for ballet fans). Free tickets will be distributed to those in line 30 minutes before the start of each film. In addition to screenings, there are workshops for kids where they can learn to make screen sound effects, create outlandish hair and make-up effects and even get inserted into a Burton film themselves.
  • CN Tower will be hosting (Saturday and Sunday note: not on Monday) Elmo, Cookie Monster and Abby from Sesame Street in the Tower’s Skyquest Theatre.
  • North York’s Family Fun Day
  • Canadian Air and Space Museum

These are just some ideas.  Whatever you do, enjoy your day with your family and may it be a memorable one!
